Our primer on websites...
If you are one of the many
people overwhelmed by how all of this works, we'll simplify it a
bit. This page is mainly all about SEO - Search Engine
Optimization.
Primarily, search engine optimization (SEO) is directed towards
placing your website higher in search rankings for your main
keywords to get more targeted traffic. If a web user knows your
name, just about any search will turn you up. If the web user
doesn't know your name and
wants a specific product or service (your keywords) - will your site
be among the furnished results? Test yourself here, figure out what
keywords your customers type in to find you, then try it yourself,
If you don't show up - you need some SEO.
SEO is about relevancy - keywords and site content. The major search engines
send out constantly roving bots that routinely check every web site
they can find to analyze what the site is about and place that site
in their rankings. If you are all about selling shoes in Atlanta,
your site content should reflect that information, if it does,
chances are your site will show up if a web user types in "atlanta
shoe stores" in the search box. It's not quite that simple, but
that's the basic thrust. There are no ethical shortcuts or magical
remedies to get around this - be very wary of anyone who claims
otherwise. Content is king.
There is a "long tail" here. Your Atlanta shoe store can have a
special page all about orthopedic shoes, or children's shoes, etc.
Lumping all your products and service on one page dilutes the impact
and specific relevance on search engines. If you make a home page
that says, yup, we are a shoe store in Atlanta, then prominently
link to your various departments, each department will have a better
chance of ranking by itself. Now, if a customer is looking for
"orthopedic shoes in atlanta" you should shine. Not all
customers need to come in your "front door" (home page) - many will
enter your site thru these content/product pages. Make sure your
navigation is easy to understand so they can explore the rest of
your site if need be.

Sponsored Keyword Ads:
You can open an account in any major search engine to place a
sponsored listing in the result of any keyword search. Prices vary,
the ad is free until someone clicks on it, then you can pay from 10
cents to many dollars for the click-thru to your site.
